Principles and Praxis in Ancient Greek Philosophy
Studies of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle in Honor of Fred D. Miller, Jr.
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
This volume was conceived as a Festschrift for Fred D. Miller, Jr., whose wide-ranging publications span a remarkable number of fields, including Ancient Philosophy, Political Theory, Science Fiction, Philosophy of Law, and Metaphysics. Although Miller has contributed original works in all of these areas, his thoughts have returned again and again to Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition, producing many articles and books engaging facets of Aristotle’s works, sometimes as an expositor, sometimes as a defender, and other times as a critic. In all his works, Miller’s focus has been unremittingly philosophical rather than antiquarian: he has wanted to determine what of Aristotle and his fellow philosophers of antiquity remains viable today, what requires extrapolation or augmentation, and what must be—after careful characterization and consideration—be rejected as indefensible. The volume reflects this attitude - however, restricting itself to investigations related to Miller’s many outstanding achievements in Ancient Philosophy. The chapters selected honor Miller’s own unremittingly philosophical engagement with ancient texts: some seek to characterize and assess, other place ancient thinkers into dialogue with contemporary philosophers, and still others join Miller in looking to ancient paradigms as guides to modern institutions. They share in common a commitment to exact scholarship wed to an unapologetic effort to ferret out the lasting value of the texts they examine. The volume is aimed at scholars in Ancient Philosophy, historians of philosophy and scholars interested in looking at the Classics through a more modern lens.
