For these three shifts to happen there is a need to a holistic approach to address different needs of conservation activities. Several approaches have been tried, including integrated development as a route to conservation, strict protected areas, community managed areas, etc. Results of these approaches are still debatable, which has brought conservationist in Central Africa to think about another way of integrating all the conservation components together in one single approach. This approach has been termed ‘’, which uses large areas with different attributes and has been tried since the late 1990s. Yet, there are very few instances where the landscape experience has been scientifically and lessons learnt drawn into a corpus of knowledge to guide future conservation initiatives across lands that were selected as landscapes across Central Africa. For many laymen, the notion of biodiversity conservation landscape remains very theoretical, at the very best if it is not simply seen as yet another external imposition on local communities. Therefore, there is a need for conservation practitioners to subjugate one biodiversity conservation landscape as one case study and present all the potential knowledge and management elements that have been tried in these large areas to see why they have been chosen, what has been tried and where the conservation community currently stands with this new conservation fancy fashion. This is what is being discussed in this book using the work done in the Lake Tumba Landscape, Democratic Republic of Congo. The book starts with the presentation of the process that led to the creation of the notion of the biodiversity conservation landscapes across central Africa before identifying models of biodiversity management. The book also identifies gaps in knowledge and the potential for the landscape approach to conduce to sustainable biodiversity conservation through the practical inclusion of stakeholders in negotiations and how to find trade-offs. The book draws from the experience of several people with the firsthand knowledge that have been working in the Lake Tumba area for the early years of the implementation of the concept in that area and gives a sense to why that approach seems, up to now, one of the most promising way to envisage the integration of biodiversity conservation and other local, national and international needs. weiterlesen
