Through 47 interviews with non-binary people, this book illuminates the limiting effect that binary gender ideology has upon people’s gender identity and expression as well as the ways in which nonbinary people break free of these limitations by rethinking sex and gender, resignifying gender through visual and verbal cues, and resisting erasure. Chapters provide rich descriptions of the lived experiences of non-binary people and illustrate the “redoing” of gender in action, a concept which has remained largely hypothetical among sociologists.
