This book investigates gendered discrimination and harassment against women politicians in Japan. It does so with extensive interviews with women politicians in both local and national level politics about their experiences and quantitative research drawn from survey data.Shedding light on a hidden issue that is of grave importance for democracy and for women’s rights in Japan, the book also elaborates on obstacles facing politically ambitious women such as political party culture, the electoral system that favors incumbents and those with connections to those in power, social norms that discourage women from running for office.
