The dissertation offers an analysis of postgraduate academic training in Germany from a sociological and pedagogical perspective. The work is based on the theory that the postgraduate academic training suffers from a lack of professionalisation - at an organisational as well as at a personal level. On the basis of a grounded theory study the author develops a complex picture of work in postgraduate academic training. The outcome is an empirically based and grounded theory model of action in the social world of postgraduate academic training.
