Stories of the Indian Immigrant Communities in Germany
Why Move?
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
This book explores the lives of Indian immigrants in Germany, from the first phase that started in the 1950s until the present day. Recent data shows that there has been a sharp increase in the number of Indians migrating to Germany, for employment and higher education, a substantial portion of which are young women. This trend was not affected even by the pandemic. This book analyses how the EU Blue Card Scheme, along with several factors in India, have emerged as migration motivations for these people. Although negligible in numbers, people from India are also arriving in India for political refuge. Until now, the popular perception even in the academia is that Indians no longer seek political refuge, but this is a myth. Datta’s field work suggests that there is a steady growth in number of Indians seeking political refuge especially through frameworks such as Scholars at Risk, but the success rate is significantly lower. Since these numbers are far less in comparison to the applicants from other countries they do not find enough visibility, but their stories are included here too.
