The concept of resilience is currently used in very diverse scientific fields and contexts. It has originally emerged in psychology, especially in studies concerning the psychology of the individual. From there it has spread to numerous disciplines and was further developed in inter-disciplinary work, particularly in the environmental sciences such as social ecology but also, more recently, in the social sciences and humanities. Especially in its practical use as well as in popular science, the concept is frequently taken to mean the opposite of vulnerability, that is, the sensitivity of a social unit towards existential threats through disruptions that can lead to its dissolution or destruction. In this sense, resilience can be taken to denote a property of social units. But at the same time, resilience and vulnerability may be conceptualised as complementary.
