Take Off (2023) is the first in an ongoing series of catalogues that focuses on master students who have completed their studies and exhibited together at the Burg Gallery. The publication begins by guiding the reader through the installation of the exhibition, giving a sense of the scale of each work, and how they were placed together within the gallery rooms. This is followed by a transcribed conversation between the dean of the art faculty Sara Burkhardt and pro-dean Paul McDevitt, each speaking their native language as they discuss the meaning of the academic title and the options for those graduates about to leave BURG. The playful combination of languages highlights the international nature of our school, and is naturally switched around in the accompanying translation. Each master student is given a generous number of pages to in which to display documentation and details of their works, followed by an index of artists’ statements and detailed information on each artwork. The aim of Take Off is to serve as both a guide to the exhibition, and to form part of a growing archive of artists who have completed this significant conclusion to their studies. Designers Torsten Illner and Tobias Jacob have made specific layout choices to give the publication a life far beyond the exhibition. This includes a bold colour scheme, large text and page numbers, and printing the artists’ names along the spine of the book.
