Der ‚Osten‘ Europas ist das paradoxe Andere - anders, aber doch nie anders genug, sich den Projektionen, mit denen es belegt wird, beständig widersetzend. An der Konstruktion des Eigenen und des Fremden ist auch die Musik beteiligt, die damit offenbar eine identitätsstiftende Funktion annimmt. Der Schwerpunkt liegt in den hier versammelten Beiträgen auf Musikbeispielen aus Mittel- und Südosteuropa, doch beschränkt sich der Band nicht darauf: Die Bandbreite reicht von Martin Luther bis Dubioza kolektiv, wobei auch eine globale Perspektive, etwa mit der japanischen Sicht auf die deutsche Musik, Eingang findet.
