The final years of the 17th century were marked by continual military conflict in Europe from the British Isles in the west to the Ottoman Empire in the east. As leaders such as Louis XIV, Leopold I, and William III sought to solidify their positions politically, religiously, and/or territorially, political journalists fed the news-hungry public broadsheet reports of important battles and supplied interpretations of the major events. Often illustrated with engaging images, the contents of these broadsheets ranged from semi-objective reports to scurrilous caricatures. The present volume reproduces all known German political broadsheets from the years 1686 to 1700.
