This edited collection offers an important intervention in the study of the changing face of cinematic representations of race and ethnicity as constructed through one of the main mediums for cultural contestation and negotiation. Hollywood is a global powerhouse generating $11.4 billion in 2015 in the United States and Canada. Although the study of the role of race and ethnicity in Hollywood films is not unique, what distinguishes this project is the examination of the contemporary racialized politics and discourse that arose in response to the Obama presidency. Contributors analyze the ways that the film industry has been engaged in a discursive battle over the articulation of current racial relations during a time of unprecedented social discord and division.
