The Securitisation of News in Turkey
Journalists as Terrorists?
Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)
This book asks how and why Turkey has come to be alongside China and Russia as one of the world’s leading repressors of press freedom. It argues that journalism has been securitised in Turkey in order to justify an authoritarian response to it for the purpose of securing the power base of the governing AK Party. However, it puts this into context in two ways: It acknowledges that this is not a new phenomenon but argues the repression of the free news media has intensified and accelerated in the past decade as AKP-driven illiberalism in Turkey has increased. The book also examines how the authoritarian approach of the AKP is interwoven with repression associated with wider political themes in Turkey - Kemalism, Gülenism and the Kurdish issue. It puts all this together to explain why and how speaking truth unto power in Turkey has become an increasingly rare – and risky - occupation.weiterlesen
