TUTI

Proposals of urban development

Produktform: Buch / Einband - flex.(Paperback)

Tuti is an island located in the heart of Khartoum, Sudan, at the confluence of the Blue and the White Nile. Its unique and strategic location – surrounded by the „Three Towns“ of the Capital city; Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum North – makes it a focal point of the entire country. Up to very recent times, the island was almost isolated and only accessible by ferry. It therefore stands as an indigenous virgin site, opposing all the forces of development taking place in the immediate vicinity. However, the construction of Tuti Bridge linking the island with the City of Khartoum has sparked considerable change in the urban setup of the island and has attracted many real estate investors and developers with enthusiastic projects. The situation of Tuti Island among the jostling interests of the three districts of Khartoum represents a unique cultural heritage. Workable concepts for the sustainable development of Tuti must constitute both concepts for the protection of this heritage as well as for strengthening the identity of the location and its people. The budding young architects of the School of Architecture at the Hochschule Bremen (City University of Applied Sciences) and the Faculty of Architecture/ University of Khartoum took up the challenge presented by these complex questions with great commitment and dedication. This book documents the joint teaching and research activities in the course of a project undertaken in the winter semester 2018/19 which was designed to provide inspiration for the urban development of Tuti, the island in the heart of Khartoum – but also a teaching format that transcends the geographical and cultural area of origin of both universities.weiterlesen
