La mantica ha una presenza ubiquitaria nel mondo antico e medievale. La ricerca in merito, tuttavia, ha trascurato largamente la valenza sociale del fenomeno. Di contro, si osserva che fin dall’Antichità è impiegata un’ampia gamma di metodi predittivi con straordinarie ripercussioni sociali. Le risposte offerte ai consultanti della divinazione testimoniano le urgenze della clientela, specialmente in periodi di crisi. In questo libro esaminiamo le predizioni incluse nei trattati divinatori greci attestati da papiri, epigrafi, manoscritti medievali, focalizzando in modo peculiare i temi concernenti le questioni sociali più rilevanti. In tal modo possiamo comprendere meglio le modalità della pratica divinatoria che è finalizzata a soddisfare le richieste del pubblico. I manuali compilati nel periodo tardoantico e bizantino offrono un campionario di profezie che corrispondono a temi ricorrenti relativi a questioni di affari, ricchezza, avanzamento sociale oppure problemi privati come salute e matrimonio. Queste collezioni di predizioni sono altamente rivelatorie riguardo al complesso delle relazioni sociali postulate nella cultura classica e medievale, comprese le tematiche relative al mondo femminile e alle istanze degli schiavi, i quali figurano ugualmente tra i clienti privilegiati dei prontuari divinatori. Peraltro, questi libri contengono esempi istruttivi di continuità di pratica e teoria sociale dall’Antichità all’età moderna. The study is organized into five chapters, each of them covering a different aspect of the reception of the History. It includes a thorough and up-to-date synoptic introduction, an appendix, and extensive bibliography, setting each chapter in the context of broader scholarship. Beginining with a discussion of Thucydides and of the various views on his influence, the work proceeds to scrutinize all explicit evidence of the use of the History from the fourth century BC onwards, assessing its circulation in the period in question. Further, a reading of Thucydides’ chapter on method is offered, which forms a basis for investigation how the principles articulated there have been echoed by the Hellenistic authors. This is followed by an enquiry into the remaining pieces of the treatises about theory of historiography that mention Thucydides. The final section demonstrates that certain passages of the History were admired for their vividness and imitated by the Hellenistic historians. Overall, the monograph brings a balanced perspective to the complex issue of various responses to Thucydides in the Hellenistic period.
