Ulrich Exner has a consummate sense of form and its setting. I experience Uli, as it were, as a genuine synaesthete in what he creates. His diverse artistic works echo one another in their contouring, be they fleeting sketches or elaborate drawings, or his modelling of colour or of a colour space, space that Uli intuits sensorially as tone, as proportion, canonised as a physical entity, and which he would doubtless be capable of measuring out as a musician. This is coupled with an uncanny sense of as-surance in his pitching of the general tenor. So too the melodic modulation of the theme, the fugue and fashionings between the parts and prodigiousness of his outlines for a composition: everything interacts in its proper place, each bearing witness, a proclamation, and the same is true in miniature of his layout and graphic design for this catalogue and of the dramaturgy he crafted for this exhibition. His deep creative being is composed of combinations of various sensory impressions – and this is how Uli forges his material world into architectures of wondrous openness.
