Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) is considered as one of the greatest writers in the English language during the 20th century and is a leading figure in modernist writing. Working with nonlinear approaches to narrative, she exerted a major influence on the genre. 75 years after her death, her works continue to be relevant. While she is best known for her novels, especially Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927), Woolf also wrote pioneering essays on artistic theory, literary history, women’s writing, and the politics of power. In the essay A Room of One’s Own (1929), Woolf blamed women’s absence from history not on their lack of brains and talent, but on their poverty.
