The conference transcript of the 9th GEW Science Conference (GEW-Wissenschaftskonferenz) is a polemic for better funding and therefore better working and employment conditions at universities. The authors discuss how sustainable academic funding can be implemented. Focal points are trends in university funding, personnel planning in the context of third-party funding, the financial situations of students, service catalogues for government funding of research and teaching as well as transparency and plannability of university careers. Finally, the executive committee of the German Education Union (Bildungsgewerkschaft GEW) formulates five stipulations for a sustainable education and research funding - the Wittenberg declaration.
