In December 2002, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Institut für Byzantinistik und Neogräzistik of the University of Vienna a symposium was organized in memory of the Institute’s founder, Herbert Hunger. About 40 former students and graduates of the Institute gave reports on various subjects of their research activities. The contributions now presented in printed form cover a broad variety of subject areas such as history and society, language and literature, fine arts and music, historical geography and material culture, methodology and history of research.
