A fresh look at St Luke 10, 25-37 reveals that the well-known Good Samaritan commits himself to re-finance the deficit of the innkeeper’s business, if the initially provided “merciful money” will run out. This leads, in turn, to the question whether a “merciful social service” – like the German Churches’ Diakonie or Caritas – must necessarily pursue a monetary successful business basis. Under which circumstances the social services may be allowed to work in an economic deficit situation?
