Sarkophagi are a group of monuments, which belongs to the core area of art and culture as well of the Imperial Roman as of the Early Christian and Byzantine Empire. In this volume of the »Repertorium der christlich-antiken Sarkophage« are published for the first time all the examples from Constantinople, the capital of the empire, as well as those in Asia Minor, in the provinces Syria, Palaestina and Arabia. This catalogue includes detailed descriptions and numerous illustrations. Introductions for each group put the material in a broader context.

The study of Christian-antique sarcophagi, decorated with reliefs, is a major task of Early Christian and Byzantine Archaeology. This fourth volume of the »Repertorium der christlich-antiken Sarkophage« by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) documents sarcophagi from the geographical area of the province Hispania and Mauretania Tingitana in Late Antiquity – present Spain, Portugal and Morocco. The catalog with descriptions and accompanying plates is supplemented by a commentary, which includes the discussion of the objects according to their provenance, workshop-groups and considers the cultural contacts between Hispania and the neighboring provinces to provide the basis for a further discussion.
