This volume contains papers from a workshop on “Life in the medieval town – new archaeobiological research” held in November 2019. Results of zoological, botanical and anthropological investigations on find materials from medieval cities are presented. The contributions deal with different facets of urban life, including nutrition and provisioning, trade, handicrafts, demography and the burden of disease among urban populations, as well as questions of environmental and economic history.

The volume presents the results of archaeozoological studies on large animal bone inventories from two prehistoric settlements in Thrace, Drama (district of Jambol) and Kırklareli-Aşağı Pınar (Turkish Thrace). Focusing on the period Middle Neolithic to Late Copper Age, aspects such as the composition of livestock, the main exploitation pattern in cattle, sheep, goat and pig, the level of livestock breeding and the nature and extent of hunting, fishing and collection are examined. In addition, special attention is paid to the reconstruction of environmental conditions and anthropogenic influences on the natural wildlife.
