Migration is historically not a new phenomenon and the reasons for migration can be numerous. However, there are several factors that usually spur them on: low income, unemployment, poor living conditions, food shortages, war(s), climate related issues such as droughts, floods etc., among others. The migration flows of the past years from the Middle East and Africa to Europe are therefore neither a surprise, nor a new phenomenon.
