The Archaeology of the Roman Provinces is a young discipline. As an academic subject, it has rapidly achieved great successes in the field of excavation and research and has increased our knowledge to a degree that barely keeps pace with the theoretical mastery of the results. The rapid development of scientific methods has contributed significantly to the self-assurance of the subject and opened up new perspectives for future research. Now and again it has been noted that Provincial Roman archeology has neglected its scientific foundations, methods and theories by omitting a reflection of their concepts and the validity of their findings. In the everyday research and teaching process we seldom worry about the meaning of terms such as analogy and hypothesis, chronology and periodization, or other abstract concepts. This volume deals with the basics of scientific theory, sources, methods and research aims of the subject in 140 articles. The reference book helps students to orient themselves in the language and thinking of science; but also the archaeologically interested will benefit from reading the manual.

Amphorae played a central role in the long distance transport and trade of (mediterranean) food and other goods during the Roman period. Today they represent an excellent archaeological source for ancient economic history and nutrition habits. This volume comprises an analysis of more than 2000 amphorae from Cambodunum (Kempten, Bavaria), an urban centre of the Roman province of Raetia. The classification, documentation and examination of the vessels in reference to economic aspects yielded new results on the trade connections and supply of Raetia with goods from the eastern and western Mediterranean.

The archaeological site of Burghöfe is known mainly for the Roman fort and not for its medieval castle. Excavations from 2001 to 2007 established a first picture of the medieval history of the site. By the 9th or 10th century a fortified manor house was built in the ruins of the late Roman fort, which was extended to a castle with a central keep in the 11th century. In the 12th century the castle named “Turenberc” was listed as a royal property. During the 13th and 14th century the dynasties of Pappenheim, Wittelsbach and Waler transformed the large fortification into a small but strongly fortified castle. The huge ditches and access yard are still preserved.

Das Kastell Myd(---) ist das größte der von legionaren Arbeitsvexillationen aus Lambaesis (Ostalgerien) unter Kaiser Septimius Severus im Jahr 201 fertig gestellten neuen Kastelle an der weit nach Süden vorgeschobenen Grenze Tripolitaniens. Es liegt am Übergang von der Halb- zur Steinwüste oberhalb einer großen Oase. Die Ausgrabungen konzentrierten sich auf die vier, teilweise bis 10 m hoch erhaltenen Tore des Kastells und das Stabsgebäude. Nach Aufgabe des Kastells um 275/280 ist eine neuerliche Nutzung nach Instandsetzungsarbeiten im späten 4. und der ersten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts von großer Bedeutung. Das Kastell ist mit den in der Notitia Dignitatum Occ. 31, 30 genannten castra Madensia identifizierbar.
