This book deals with prehistoric rock art (petroglyphs) from the northern fringe of the Sahara, or more precisely from the area situated between the Western Anti-Atlas, the Jebel Bani and the Wadi Draa. In the main, the historico-cultural analysis of the rock engravings that are presented, mostly for the first time, concerns problems related to their classification, context and chronology. These issues are discussed with regard to the history of civilization, as well as with reference to climatic change and to the geography and the ethnography of the mid valley of Wadi Draa. In the course of several preliminary surveys in South Morocco, the author has methodically recorded the archaeological sources that form the basis of the investigation.

Under a German-Moroccan cooperation, research into the early settlement history of eastern Morocco is taking place. One focus of this project is the archaeological excavations in the Ifri n'Ammar cave. The interaction of different disciplines in the processing of the extensive finds from the Ifri n'Ammar revealed many new and important insights into North African cultural sequences and environmental conditions in the time frame of 200,000 - 30,000 years ago. Cultural carrier of the Middle Palaeolithic Aterian is the anatomically modern human of African origin, who distinguishes himself in the Ifri n'Ammar through early and symbolic creations of art and jewelry. The book consists of three sections of contributions representing novel ideas focusing on the quantity, quality, and actual condition of the monumental built environment of the ancient Maya in the northeast of the department of Petén, Guatemala. A special catalogue is its major contribution. It includes detailed, systematic and updated descriptions for comparative purposes. 64 archaeological sites are described in the form of technical data sheets, some of which are reported for the first time. In addition to the descriptions, the sites are illustrated by plans, isometric views, and several by photographs. Further chapters deal with an analysis of urban space and cover aspects of conservation, presentation and use of the built environment as part of the National Heritage. Consolidated and restored ancient Maya cities ready to attract visitors are important landmarks for the future of the archaeological heritage of the north eastern Petén.

The second part of the series “In kaiserlichem Auftrag” has the subheading “Archeological Studies of the DAE in Tigray / Ethiopia”. In more than 25 articles, authors will discuss “Ethiopia mirrored in historic maps” (F. Haubold) and “Ethiopia 100 years ago” (Asfa-Wossen Asserate), the historic environment of Tigray (W. Schmidt) as well as Northern Tigray and Eritrea with reference to photos taken in those days (A. Ritler and L. Lätt) (part 1). About the DAE the sequel of the Littmann diary (R. Vogt) is included among other things, D. Phillotson discusses the achievements of the DAE and H. v. Lübke, following archival research, presents new insights into the “inner life” of the expedition, accompanied by notes by St. Wenig (part 2). The third part, on archaeology and history, occupies a large part of the volume. Following an introduction by P. Henze, R. Fattovich and J. Phillips sum up the archaeological research in Tigray since the DAE, while other authors give an account of recent research in the region. In the forth part, material such as inscriptions, coins, and other small findings are evaluated. A third, concluding volume, which will focus mainly on the ethnological research of the DAE and the churches and monasteries in Aksum, Adwa and Debre Damo it visited, is being prepared.

Coins are a principal source to elucidate both the pattern of trade between Sri Lanka and the western world in late antiquity and the island’s monetary and economic history. The study first and foremost critically compiles and annotates the finds of Late Roman, ancient Indian and local coins discovered in Sri Lanka.

Vor der Reichseinigung durch den Ersten Kaiser Qin Shihuangdi (reg. 221 bis 210 v. Chr.) ist China geprägt durch die Machtkämpfe der sogenannten Streitenden Reiche. Im Widerstreit stehen vor allem die beiden kulturell unterschiedlichen Staaten Qin und Chu. Erst mit der Gründung des Zentralstaates im Jahr 221 v. Chr. durch die Qin werden alle Lebensbereiche vereinheitlicht. Schon bald wurden sie durch die Westlichen Han (221 v.Chr. bis 6 n.Chr.) abgelöst. Nach einer Phase der Konsolidierung setzte die Regierung des Kaisers Wu auf forcierte Expansion. Diese Epoche steht im Mittelpunkt des wissenschaftlichen Interesses, da sich in der Westlichen Han-Zeit noch Traditionen der beiden Staaten Qin und Chu im Grabkult nachweisen lassen. Die vorliegende Arbeit konzentriert sich auf zwei Gräberfelder der Westlichen Han-Zeit, die durch die Bodenbeschaffenheit, Feuchtigkeit und die besondere Bestattungsform sehr gut erhalten sind. Lassen sich dort außer den Bestattungsformen von Chu auch andere Traditionen nachweisen? Wie entwickelten sich die Bestattungsformen in der formgebenden Phase der neuen Dynastie der Han? Überlebte in diesen östlichen Gebieten ebenfalls der Grabkult der Chu bis in die Han-Zeit? Aspekte von Tradition und Wandel im Grabkult der Westlichen Han-Zeit werden anhand der beiden Gräberfelder exemplarisch untersucht und ausführlich dargestellt.

Unter den vorspanischen Kulturen Ecuadors ist die Kultur von Tolita für ihre detailreich ausgearbeiteten Figuren bekannt, die häufig Mischwesen darstellen. Mittels der Analyse solcher Darstellungen versucht Maria Fernanda Ugalde sich der Vorstellungswelt der Schöpfer jener Kunstwerke zu nähern und vorsichtige Rückschlüsse auf die Gesellschaftsstruktur von Tolita zu ziehen.

Auf der Grundlage von Daten, die im Rahmen eines archäologischen Langzeit-Projekts des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts erhoben wurden, werden 3.000 Jahre Siedlungsgeschichte in der Region Palpa an der Westflanke der Anden in Süd-Peru (14,5° S) rekonstruiert. Dabei wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob in dieser trockenen Gegend die beobachteten erheblichen Veränderungen im Siedlungsverhalten durch Klimaänderungen in der Vergangenheit ausgelöst worden sein könnten. Der allgemeine Trend deutet darauf hin, dass ein solcher Zusammenhang nur in wenigen Epochen bestanden hat.
