Diagrams are not static figures, but they are rather, and in a double sense, dynamic configurations: firstly, through the interrelations they construct between the pieces of information which they provide, and secondly through the sequential ordering of several diagrams within any given textual or iconic work. That is to say, they present a rhythm or, to be even more precise, they create a visual rhythm which in turn refers to cosmic, biological, musical, ritual or social rhythms. Taking as its starting point the modern conceptualisation of social rhythms, this publication deepens our theoretical grasp of the concept of rhythm in the Middle Ages. In doing so, its aim is to enrich our understanding of diagrams and of their function in medieval culture.
