Drawing on the world wide largest collection of Aklama, sacred sculptures of the Ewe and Dangme living in southern Ghana, assembled in the Study Collection of the painter Horst Antes, the authors Gigi Pezzoli, Philipp Plath and Nii Quarcoopome examine their historical context, religious significance, ceremonial use and manufacturing. The Aklama are a group of small figures hitherto largely unknown to the outside world that had remained unnoticed by collectors, ethnologists and even museums. Illustrating 1424 Aklama on more than 350 full color plates, this monograph introduces for the first time collectors, students, researchers and the general public into the world of Aklama, part of a stupendous and fascinating culture to be discovered.
