"Dialogue", "secularisation" and "pluralism" have been key concepts in international discussions concerning religion, public space and education for the past decades. National educational systems face new challenges in negotiating with the multitude of civic identities and memberships. This volume enriches and complements the discussion concerning religion in education by contextualising the respective phenomena in the current Finnish educational policy and practice, as well as by compiling empirical and theoretical observations. This localised approach provides an interesting case for the analysis in many ways. Religious education at schools in Northern Europe

This edited volume aims to shed light on the relationship between the design of the Subject of religious education in different Nordic countries and the Subject knowledge and generic abilities that the Subject aims to develop, such as the ability to discern and relate to various aspects where religion and outlook on life are central factors. This volume further examines theoretical, methodological and empirical issues concerning the practice and the study of religion and non-religion, spirituality and worldviews within contemporary education.

What are the key questions highlighted in religious and spiritual education today? In societies today, the distinction in religions or identities between global and local or inside and outside no longer functions well. There is an increasing and constant need to re-examine the conceptions and theories concerning religion, dialogue and education. This volume brings together 14 new international studies.
