Death and Burial in the Near East from Roman to Islamic Times

Research in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

This book is based on a German-Arab colloquium held in Amman in September 2013, where current excavation and research results on death and burial from Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt were presented. For the first time, Arab and Near Eastern scholars were able to discuss the main features and differences in the development of funerary practices of the dead in Roman, Byzantine and Islamic times, mainly based on archaeological sources. It also reports on the processing of old excavations and summary studies on local or regional burial customs. Apart from ten lectures presented in the colloquium, five other contributions by international scholars have been included. Among the more prominent places presented here are Palmyra, Beirut, Petra, Gerasa, Alexandria, Hermupolis and St. Paul's Monastery of Deir el-Bakhît (Thebes-West).

Handbuch der Provinzialrömischen Archäologie

I. Quellen, Methoden, Ziele

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

The Archaeology of the Roman Provinces is a young discipline. As an academic subject, it has rapidly achieved great successes in the field of excavation and research and has increased our knowledge to a degree that barely keeps pace with the theoretical mastery of the results. The rapid development of scientific methods has contributed significantly to the self-assurance of the subject and opened up new perspectives for future research. Now and again it has been noted that Provincial Roman archeology has neglected its scientific foundations, methods and theories by omitting a reflection of their concepts and the validity of their findings. In the everyday research and teaching process we seldom worry about the meaning of terms such as analogy and hypothesis, chronology and periodization, or other abstract concepts. This volume deals with the basics of scientific theory, sources, methods and research aims of the subject in 140 articles. The reference book helps students to orient themselves in the language and thinking of science; but also the archaeologically interested will benefit from reading the manual.

In the first of two volumes, the findings dating from the latest period of Roman rule and the Vandalic period following it are presented, most of which were not published before. In addition to aspects of the chronology and geographical distribution of these findings, which are of high importance for protohistoric and Provincial Roman archaeology, the study will focus on questions about the wearers and their cultural identity.

Amphoren aus Cambodunum / Kempten

Ein Beitrag zur Handelsgeschichte der römischen Provinz Raetia

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

Amphorae played a central role in the long distance transport and trade of (mediterranean) food and other goods during the Roman period. Today they represent an excellent archaeological source for ancient economic history and nutrition habits. This volume comprises an analysis of more than 2000 amphorae from Cambodunum (Kempten, Bavaria), an urban centre of the Roman province of Raetia. The classification, documentation and examination of the vessels in reference to economic aspects yielded new results on the trade connections and supply of Raetia with goods from the eastern and western Mediterranean.

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

For the first time ever is the large, manifold collection of late Roman brooches and belt fittings from the late third until the first half of the fifth century AD from the provincial capital Augusta Vindelicum/Augsburg documented and typologically analysed. The find contexts and the spatial distribution in the urban area was also assessed. The so called crossbow brooches and the different belt fittings were mainly used by civil servants and soldiers of the late Roman army. The finds are a significant reference group for the Roman Alpine and Danube provinces and prove the presence of Roman administration and military in Augsburg up to the second quarter or the mid fifth century AD.

Nordafrikanische Sigillata, Küchenkeramik und Lampen aus Augusta Vindelicum/Augsburg

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

This study investigates African Red Slip Ware (ARS), kitchen ware and lamps from Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg in Bavaria). Products from North and Central Tunisian pottery workshops are dateable from the late 1st to the first half of the 5th century AD. The provenance of North African pottery can be identified by macroscopic and chemical analyses with X-ray fluorescence. In combination with chronologically differentiated maps these analyses aim to better understand both the settlement and economic history of the provincial capital of Raetia. The chronologically important material serves as a reference for the supply of Raetia and cross-regional comparative studies.

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

Jahrhunderts

Römische Lampen der Sammlung K. Wilhelm

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

In addition to some Italian picture lamps of the 1st century A.D., the main focus of K. Wilhelm's lamp collection is on 41 lamps of the middle and late imperial period produced in North Africa, as well as three singular plaster matrices for the manufacture of lamps with heart-shaped snout. The 32 red-tone, red engobed lamps from Central Tunisian potteries give an insight into the rich variety of snout and shoulder designs during the early phase of red-tone lamp production; they also show connections between the mirror decoration motifs and the appliquéd sigillata of the second half of the 3rd and 4th centuries. X-ray fluorescence analyses can be used to verify their production in two pottery centers.

Jahrhunderts

Römisches Tafelgeschirr der Sammlung K. Wilhelm

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

This study focuses on the wide range of vessel forms and decoration of the rare appliqué-decorated red slip ware from northern Tunisia, and especially the appliqué-, relief- and stamp-decorated sigillata made in the most imprtant mid and late Roman potteries at Sidi Marzouk Tounsi in central Tunisia. The exceptional collection of vessels accumulated by K. Wilhelm forms the basis of this work and is presented here in a catalogue documenting 138 complete vessels and 104 fragments, including numerous unique forms and motifs of decoration. The analysis of the appliqué and relief decoration with pagan, allegoric and early Christian motifs documents the iconographic change of themes over the centuries. It is particularly noteworthy to highlight the end of production of the late Roman mould-made, relief-decorated red slip ware not before the middle of the 6th century AD.

Produktform: Buch / Einband - fest (Hardcover)

The archaeological site of Burghöfe is known mainly for the Roman fort and not for its medieval castle. Excavations from 2001 to 2007 established a first picture of the medieval history of the site. By the 9th or 10th century a fortified manor house was built in the ruins of the late Roman fort, which was extended to a castle with a central keep in the 11th century. In the 12th century the castle named “Turenberc” was listed as a royal property. During the 13th and 14th century the dynasties of Pappenheim, Wittelsbach and Waler transformed the large fortification into a small but strongly fortified castle. The huge ditches and access yard are still preserved.
