Die in den letzten Jahren intensivierte Erforschung der mittelalterlichen Malerei im Christlichen Orient wird durch den angekündigten Band um eine beachtliche Reihe von Wandbildern bereichert, die erst jüngst im Rahmen von Restaurierungsarbeiten und Ausgrabungen zu Tage kamen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt mit dem Jakobskloster bei Qara und der Eliasgrotte von Macarrat Saydanaya auf dem Qalamungebirge nördlich von Damaskus, der Horizont ist mit dem Kastron von Androna aber bis in das syrische Steppengebiet östlich von Hama gesteckt. Neben einer ausführlichen Dokumentation behandeln die kunsthistorischen Beiträge auch den künstlerischen Austausch Syriens mit Zypern und die Ausbildung eines syrischen Regionalstils um das Jahr 1200. Vorangestellt ist ein historischer Abriß der Ortschaft Qara, die bis 1266 rein melkitisch war. Weitere Beiträge sind der Restaurierung und der chemischen Probenanlayse der Wandmalereien sowie der syrischen und griechischen Epigraphik gewidmet.

Christians in Lebanon have been painting their churches ever since the time of Christ but their work is largely unknown. Presently, the larger study of Byzantine painting has barely touched upon medieval Lebanon and very little has been published on a closely connected group of paintings in medieval Syria. Most, but not all of the paintings that have survived to the present day in Lebanon and also in Syria belong to the 12th and 13th centuries during the Crusades, a period when the greatest historical developments were taking place. As long as this region remained unexamined, an understanding of the cultural history of the Mediterranean basin was incomplete. This study approaches Lebanese paintings from two aspects. In the first place, it describes 26 monuments still visible today. The main body of the text then discusses the paintings as a group, including chapters on history, architecture, iconography and style. These chapters explore and attempt to explain relationships between Lebanese painting and other paintings in contemporary, Christian communities. Ideas moved with great rapidity across the Mediterranean during the 12th and 13th centuries and the Lebanese frescoes reflect the vigorous and colourful society of Outremer. Among all historical circumstances since the fall of the Roman Empire, the Crusades had the most far-reaching impact on European history and culture. Arab history was not unaffected by the Crusades but the greater impulse was from the East to the West. There were momentous impulses that reached across the seas at this time, not the least of them being the burgeoning commerce of the silk route and the approach of the Mongols. Lebanese painting reflects changes of this kind during this period. They not only illumine our understanding of medieval history in the Mediterranean basin, but also our understanding of the East and the West we experience today.

The book deals with two ecclesiastical palaces. They were excavated by the Egyptian antiquities service in the years 1948/49 and they are dated according to the sources to the end of the late antiquity (ca. A.D. 700). They belong thus to the few architectural monuments which beside some churches came down to us. The two palaces of Hilwan represent thus an important contribution to our knowledge of the late antique architecture of Egypt, a period of which until now only a few churches are known.

Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die vergleichende synchrone Darstellung des alt- und neuarmenischen Tempus-Aspekt-Modussystems und seine diachrone Analyse. Bei der Beurteilung der Vorgeschichte des altarmenischen Verbalsystems ist die dialektgeographische Position des Armenischen im Verhältnis zum Griechischen, Phrygischen und Arischen in der sogenannten südostindogermanischen Gruppe ebenso von Belang wie die Frage nach dem relativen Alter des durch diese Gruppe repräsentierten Tempus-Aspekt-Modussystems im Vergleich zu den anderen indogermanschen Sprachen. Ein Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung ist die Analyse des Verhältnisses der Kategorie Modus zu Aspekt und Tempus im Armenischen einerseits und der Vergleich des armenischen Aspektsystems mit dem durch das Griechische repräsentierten aspect flexionnel (point vs. ligne) und dem durch das Slavische repräsentierten aspect syntagmatique andererseits (vollendet vs. unvollendet bzw. abgeschlossen vs. nicht abgeschlossen). Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die Modusverwendung. Der Aufbau des Verbalsystems machte jedoch die zusätzliche Berücksichtigung des Tempus nötig. Die verwendete altarmenische Literatur des 5. Jahrhunderts hat unmittelbar nach der Erfindung des armenischen Alphabets im Jahr 407 eine hohe und klassische Stufe erreicht. Diese Epoche wird wegen der klassischen und reinen Sprache „goldenes Zeitalter“ genannt. Außer der Bibelübersetzung gibt es aus dieser Zeit zahlreiche weitere Originalschriften verschiedener Autoren mit historischen und theologischen Inhalten.

The library of the George & Mathilde Salem Foundation (Aleppo, Syria) is one of the most important private collections of manuscripts in the Syrian Arab Republic. It contains 547 copies in Arabic, Syriac and other languages about Christian and Islamic theology, history, grammar, science, liturgy, poetry and literature. This work offers us a detailed record and description of these manuscripts. The work includes full indices of titles, personal names, subjects and places.

Diese Einführung in die koptische Sprache stellt alle Grundzüge und Grundbausteine des Koptischen anhand des sahidischen Dialektes dar. Bei der Gestaltung wurde darauf Wert gelegt, auch nicht-standardisierte Formen zu erfassen und darzustellen, damit sich das Buch als begleitendes Hilfsmittel etwa zur Lektüre von Nag-Hammadi-Texten eignet. Diese Funktion wurde bereits bei der Auswahl der im Anhang gebotenen Übungstexte berücksichtigt. Ein Glossar mit der Erklärung sprachwissenschaftlicher Termini und ein ausführliches Sachregister erleichtern die Handhabung. Der Aufbau des Buches ermöglicht rasches Wiederfinden einmal erlernter Formen und Satzmuster. Damit ist es insbesondere als Begleitbuch zum Koptischunterricht und als Nachschlagewerk für Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene geeignet. Interessierten, die bereits Erfahrungen im Erlernen alter Sprachen haben, kann es darüber hinaus auch zum Selbststudium dienen.

Im syrischen „Buch des heiligen Hierotheos“ werden im Bild des Seelenaufstieges sowohl die Erlösung aller Geschöpfe als auch deren endzeitliches Aufgehen in der Unendlichkeit Gottes dargestellt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung arbeitet die traditionsgeschichtlichen Hintergründe des Buches heraus und versucht, das unter dem Pseudonym des „Hierotheos“ verfasste Werk in den Kontext der origenistischen Streitigkeiten im Vorfeld des II. Konzils von Konstantinopel einzuzeichnen. Zugleich wird ein Ausblick auf die Wirkungsgeschichte des Buches in der späteren syrisch-orthodoxen Theologie gegeben.

This catalogue is typical of an ecclesiastic library belonging to a theological institution devoted to the training of priests. It is an invaluable testimony for the study of the situation and development of the Melchite church in Syria, and bears witness to the great efforts they invested in training their clergy. The works reflect the spirit of a religious community fighting to keep its faith alive and to preserve its forms of worship, tolerated though not encouraged by the Turkish Muslim authorities, and in uneasy coexistence with its Christian brothers. The catalogue also bears witness to the vigour of the Arabic language in the Christian communities in a chronological period in which the language has generally been considered to be in decline or disuse. Arabic was used to transmit the faith, for ecclesiastical organization, and also as an instrument for literature in genres such as poetry, science, history and grammar. This intellectual rearmament of the Melchite community and its development in Arabic represent a kind of pre-Nahda, a preparatory stage for the rebirth of the language, in which a key role was played by the Christian authors of this confession.

The catalogue refers to the publication of the first part of the textile collection of the museum kunst palast in Düsseldorf, prepared by Karl-Heinz Brune. Presenting 276 catalogue numbers it completes in the main the publication of those textiles stored in this museum, which derive from the collection of the well-known canonicus Franz Bock (Aachen). They were most probably found in Achmim (Panopolis). Except for some pieces the catalogue is focussed on purple and polychrome textiles of ornamental design respectively those textiles bearing exclusively animal motifs.
