Towards an integrative interpretation of potential fields and corresponding gradients by the aid of three-dimensional modelling and visualization, TIPot3D

DGMK-Research Report 771

Produktform: Buch

Abstract: Today’s geophysical interpretation and surveying benefits heavily from integration of heterogeneous geological, geophysical and topographical data, including 3D seismic surveys and imaging, gradients of potential field (mostly aero- and/or satellite) observations, on-/off-shore electro-magnetic surveys, borehole logs and many others. The software needed for this task has to support the interpreter by providing appropriate functions: According to the proposal, the aim of this project was, to develop algorithms and realize the necessary source program coding in Java for • The magnetic field respectively its gradients of induced and remanent magnetization • The regional stress field and the gravitational potential energy (GPE) • Potential field (gravity and magnetic) borehole data • Immersive visualization of even complicated geological structures. The basic software for 3D potential field modelling including 3D visualization already exists, so that the new functionality will be developed as new plugins for the existing program. New algorithms and new software has to be tested using an appropriate test case. The initial plan was to use the NW German basin, but after extensive discussions with the industry partners this plan was changed to two different target areas: • The German Continental Deep Drilling borehole (KTB), and a • Local salt structures in the Gifhorn Trough.

Preprints of the DGMK-Conference "Challenges for Petrochemicals and Fuels: Integration of Value Chains and Energy Transition"

DGMK-Tagungsbericht 2018-2

Produktform: Buch

Energy integration in the refinery, use of hydrogen produced using renewable electricity in refining and petrochemistry, chemical energy storage (e.g., via synthesis of methane or higher hydrocarbons, methanol etc.). Process intensification and sector coupling between energy and fuels/chemicals. Also welcome are contributions addressing the topic electro-mobility versus conventional fuels, including the properties and manufacture of synthetic fuels based on renewable resources. Abstracts on both fundamental studies and applied research on the above topics will be highly welcome.

Stress dependency of seismic velocity in anisotropic sedimentary rocks

DGMK-Research Report 741-2

Produktform: Buch

In the frame of the DGMK-Project 741-2 we contribute to the understanding of the stress dependency of anisotropic seismic velocity as background for seismic forward modeling (e.g. constuction of macro model for imaging) and the interpretation of seismic data with respect to pore pressure, effective stress tensor and lithology. We use the physically based porosity deformation approach for description of compliances in dry or drained anisotropic rocks. We improved the predictability of velocities by e.g. accounting for stiff porosity next to compliant porosity. We include the description of non-diagonal elements using the assumption of anellipticity and of an isotropic piezosensitivity tensor. We performed and explained supporting experiments under uniaxial loading conditions using various types of room dry sedimentary rocks with VTI and originally HTI symmetry. Furthermore we investigated the impacts of pore fluids in a sandstone and a fine grained posidonian limestone. The main effects are the Gassmann effect and local fluid flow. We conclusively explained our measurements in the fully saturated sandstone by combining velocity predictions by means of the porosity deformation approach in drained rocks with classical poroelastic models. Additionally measurements in shales under hydrostatic and triaxial loading conditions have been performed in cooperation with an external company and subsequently evaluated.

Preprints of the DGMK-Conference: "Petrochemistry and Refining in a Changing Raw Materials Landscape"

DGMK-Tagungsbericht 2017-2

Produktform: Buch

Changes in the availability and the nature of raw materials for fuels and petrochemicals always have consequences for technologies in the refining and the petrochemical industry. Currently, these industries face such changes based on the increased availability of cheap natural gas, shale gas etc. on the one hand. On the other hand, refiners have to cope with varying feedstock qualities and an increasing need for tailored high-quality fuels.

Investigations of the Damage Potential of Drilling Fluids - Return Permeability Tests under Dynamic Conditions

DGMK-Research Report 674-4

Produktform: Buch

In view of the increasing scarcity of energy resources, wells are being drilled to progressively greater depths for the production of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. Consequently, the drilling equipment is being subjected to higher temperatures and pressures. Economical exploitation of the reservoir is possible only with the application of drilling and completion methods which do not damage the formation. The damage potential of drilling fluids and treatment fluids is assessed on the basis of return permeability tests. For obtaining more conclusive results from return permeability tests and for increasing the reliability of their interpretation in the future, systematic investigations on the reproducibility of the results were of special importance. In the course of this third project phase, several return permeability tests were performed on each of two different model cores under constant conditions in the circulation system constructed at the institute. On the one hand, Obernkirchen sandstone was employed as model material; on the other hand, a synthetic material consisting of sintered borosilicate glass was used for the other model core. At least five tests were performed on the model core of each material, in order to evaluate the results for their reproducibility. A further important task was the selection of a suitable core material for future tests.
