Im Gespräch, das am 18. August 2004 aus Anlass der Ausstellung «Herzog & de Meuron: No. 250. Eine Ausstellung» im Schaulager Basel stattfand, erörtern der Basler Architekt Jacques Herzog (*1950) und der Kunsthistoriker Gottfried Boehm (*1942), langjähriger Lehrstuhlinhaber an der Universität Basel, das spannungsreiche Verhältnis der beiden grossen Mächte, Architektur und Bild, in der Arbeit von Herzog & de Meuron.

In diesem zu Collagen montierten, heterogenen Bildmaterial zeichnen sich die Inspirationen und das visuelle Umfeld ab, aus dem heraus der Künstler seine Werke entwickelt hat. The catalogue to the exhibition "Paul Chan - Selected Works", held at the Schaulager Basel in 2014, was developed by the artist in collaboration with graphic designers and intended as a "picture book within a book." At its heart is the overwhelming wealth of images in the "Selected Source Files" series. The collages of heterogeneous material testify to the wideranging sources of inspiration and the visual context on which the artist has drawn in his work. A cleverly conceived essay by Daniel Birnbaum is an aid to deeper understanding. Photographs of the installations on view in the exhibition, a list of works, and commentary linking the individual groups of works round off the publication.

The work of Paul Chan (born 1973) has charted a course in contemporary art as unpredictable and wide-ranging as the thinking that grounds his practice. "Paul Chan: Selected Writings 2000–2014" collects the critical essays and artist’s texts that first appeared in leading art journals such as "Artforum", "October", "Texte zur Kunst" and "Frieze", as well as previously unpublished speeches and textual works. From comedy to Duchamp’s artistic freedom, to the contradictions that bind aesthetics and politics, Chan’s writings revel in the paradoxes that make the experience of art both vexing and pleasurable. Paul Chan reflects on artists as diverse as Henry Darger, Chris Marker, Sigmar Polke and Paul Sharits, and grapples with writers and thinkers who have played decisive roles in his practice, including Theodor Adorno, Samuel Beckett and the Marquis de Sade. Along the way, Chan lays bare the ideas and personalities that inform his work and shows a masterly understanding of ways to test and refresh the role and potential of art in a host of broader social and political arenas beyond galleries and museums.

Der Katalog «Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts» entsteht zur gleichnamigen in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museum of Modern Art, New York, realisierten Retrospektive des Künstlers im Schaulager. Das reich illustrierte Buch bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über Naumans Karriere, die eine mehr als fünfzigjährige Arbeit in verschiedensten Medien umfasst. Naumans Werke sind sehr direkt und konfrontativ und haben oft den Charakter einfacher Versuchsanordnungen oder kritischer Selbstbefragungen. Sei es mittels Zeichnung, Druckgrafik, Video, Skulptur, Klang- oder Spracharbeit, Performance oder raumgreifender Installation immer erforscht der Künstler grundlegende Fragen in Bezug auf die phänomenologische und psychologische Erfahrung von Körper, Zeit, Raum, Bewegung und Architektur. Eine grosse Auswahl an Autorinnen und Autoren richten ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf Serien und Themen, die in der Rezeption dieses Werks bisher vernachlässigt wurden, wie etwa Naumans Interesse an architektonischen Modellen oder den Stellenwert der Farbe. The publication, which accompanied the 2013 exhibition of works by Steve McQueen at Schaulager Basel - the world’s largest to date - comprises an extensively documented catalogue of the complete works of the British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen from 1992 to 2012. There are illustrations of all the works, many of them on fold-out plates. Texts by a series of top-class authors - the artistic director of the Toronto International Film Festival, Cameron Bailey; the director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Okwui Enwezor; art historians Georges Didi-Huberman and Jean Fisher; and the curator of contemporary art at the Art Institute of Chicago, James Rondeau - and a substantial discussion with the artist offer deeper insights into Steve McQueen’s work and the nature of his powerful, thought-provoking creativity.
