In 372 catalogue numbers, the volume presents inscriptions from the Middle Weser region from the 13th century to 1650. The most important inscription site in the district of Nienburg is the former Cistercian monastery of Loccum with around 100 inscriptions. Nienburg, the former seat of the counts of Hoya, also has a rich collection of inscriptions. Further inscriptions, which are distributed among the monasteries and convents in Schinna, Nendorf and Bücken as well as the villages of the district, provide insights into the self-representation of citizens, farmers and the lower nobility.

Già affetto da errori nella prima fase della sua trasmissione – la fase che vide l’allestimento dell’exemplar universitario a partire da un codice trascritto e meticolosamente revisionato da uno scriba assai prossimo all’autore, se non dall’autore stesso –, lo Scriptum era finora disponibile in una versione che, esito di una plurisecolare vicenda editoriale, lo aveva velato di una patina umanistica, alterandone il vocabolario, sopprimendone o modificandone i contenuti. A study of the Persian poetry of Muḥammad Iqbāl (1877-1938), today Pakistan’s national poet, this work identifies the position his poems occupied between tradition and modernity, specifying the appeal they held for his contemporaries. Drawing on structural text analysis, the aesthetics of reception, and the semiotics of Umberto Eco, the study undertakes to demonstrate that the message in Payām-i Mashriq (Message from the East) and Zabūr-i ͑Ajam (Persian Psalms) is romantic. An adaptation of national romanticism, Iqbāl’s version may be called a pan-Islamic romanticism of power and so very distinct from a nature-inspired romanticism. The traditional forms utilized for the poems are revealed to be mere tools for rendering this message plausible. Employing traditional rhetorical devices to convey a thoroughly modern content, Iqbāl succeeded in establishing a bridge for the Muslims of India to connect into the discourses of pan-Islam and self-governance, thus motivating them to join India’s independence movement.

The volume contains 438 catalogue items with almost 800 inscriptions that could be recorded from the original and copy tradition. The collection reflects the history of Magdeburg from the foundation of the archbishopric by Emperor Otto I in the 10th century to the time of Otto von Guericke in the 17th century. The inscriptions represent the two dynamic centres that promoted Magdeburg's development into a major medieval and early modern city: the archbishop's seat with the cathedral chapter, and the strong city society with the council at its head, which established itself in the 12th/13th century.
