This volume celebrates the work of the American linguist Mark R. Hale with contributions from general and historical linguistics, especially comparative Indo-European linguistics, phonological and syntactic theory, and language change.

This book represents the first detailed study of Byzantine churches on the island of Sardinia. The buildings are described and analyzed in detail both individually and as a group. Many of these churches are cruciform in plan and possess a dome. The book includes an analysis of this plan type as used in Early Christian and Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture from the fourth to the sixth centuries, concluding that the Sardinian churches are datable to the early Byzantine period. Numerous architectural drawings and color photographs illustrate the churches.

This German-Arabic glossary contains the vocabulary and the agricultural terminology of the Egyptain peasants as collected during the field work for the Egyptian Dialect Atlas, as well as an Arabic-German appendix with 3500 additional entries from Dakhla, Middle Egypt and South Sinai. These are already included in the German-Arabic part. A second appendix with 262 drawings illustrates objects of the material culture.

The descendant of a noble family, Ilia Tschawtschawadse, who was an author, banker and a publicist, is considered as the „Father of the Nation“. As one of the first after the Russian Colonization, he studied in St. Petersburg, brought back progressive ideas and – with a critical look at the backwardness and lethargy in his homeland – he became its active promoter. He apportioned his property among the bondslaves, founded a society for the spreading of the literacy among Georgians, the bank of the nobility, journals, the dramaturgic society and the historic-ethnographic Society of Georgia. His literary works reflect the diversity of the Georgian society in the 19th century.

In his work „De plenitudine“ the Greek physician Galen deals with the phenomenon of plethos or "fullness"; its correct diagnosis is essential for choosing the appropriate therapeutic measure, for instance phlebotomy. For the first time, Galen's reflexions on this topic are presented in a modern critical edition -- supplemented by a German translation, notes and a detailed index.

For the Middle Ages Amicus and Amelius were the epitome of friendship. Narratives of the two friends however not only touch upon medieval ideals of friendship but also on conceptions of loyality within the Christian faith as well as on the various links between friendship and kinship. Lena Oetjens offers an edition of the three major Latin texts in this tradition as well as translations in German. The commentary investigates the narratives’ entanglement with textual traditions usually associated with Roland, Charlemagne and the holy Jacobus. In addition, the study traces multilingual aspects of the texts’ reception until Konrad`s ›Engelhart‹.

The analysis of archaeological textiles in order to write their ancient cultural history is still in its infancy. This study contributes to this process by cataloging more than 600 original pieces of headwear from the late Roman and early Byzantine periods, and evaluates them in terms of their location, date, sociological context, visual and written sources, as well as their precursors and successors. The majority of the analyzed pieces have so far remained unpublished, and many are for the first time being identified and reconstructed as head coverings. The book thus provides a material basis for costume historians, textile experts, archaeologists, sociologists, art historians, philologists, and museum curators.

This socio-literary study examines the relationship between processes of modernisation and reform, and new literary genres produced in Egypt of the second half of the 19th century. How did heterogenous modern literary forms emerge in this particular environment, and what were the underlying motivations of the new authors? Literature is regarded here as a specific sphere of knowledge and representation, facilitating in its modes of reflection novel individual and societal patterns of experience. If urbanity played a special role as constitutive element of narrative prose, ideas about new forms of public sphere and public opinion also played their role. The new means of text production, finally, attested to the recession of the auratic perception of a text.
