The antiphonary ND VI 471 was created in the 15th Century and encompasses two layers with a total of 19 pages. It possibly served as a template (exemplum) as used in, among other things, scriptoria. In particular, two songs of great artistic value, which are preserved only here, draw from this oldest and most complete extant music manuscript. Therefore this antiphonary is of outstanding importance for both Hamburg’s and the region’ music history. This edition not only contains facsimile pages and a critical edition of the antiphonary, but also includes an audio CD with music examples that completes the volume.

Of the mothers of the more than 60 emperors who ruled the Imperium Romanum from Augustus until the final division of the empire in 395, often little more is known than their name; sometimes even this has not survived. The literary, numismatic and epigraphic sources allow us to sketch biographies of only 15 emperor mothers. They are at the centre of this book. The works of the - exclusively male - ancient historians must be read critically. Many of them obviously had problems with self-confident or even ambitious women, whom they accuse of immoral behaviour, intrigues and even murder.

The significance of the Roman glass collection of the Landesmuseum Mainz lies in the great diversity of the material and in the fact that the objects, dated to the period between the early 1st and early 5th centuries A.D., come mostly from the area of ancient Mogontiacum (Mainz), a military garrison and the seat of the provincial government of Germania Superior. „Römische Gläser des Landesmueums Mainz“ presents, for the first time. all of the 1,364 objects in this important collection in catalogue format, including descriptions, line drawings, colour plates, black-and-white illustrations, maps, bibliographies and concordances. The author indetifies 124 different types of glass objects in the Mainz material, analysing these in great detail. In addition, a convenient summary of the current state of research into their dating, distribution, manufacturing methods and every-day use is provided. The archaeological context of the material is illustrated by a catalogue of 83 Roman graves from Mainz and Rheinhessen. The book benefits from an introductory chapter on the history of the collection, a summary of the history and topography of Mogontiacum, survey of the types and decorations of glassware from Roman Mainz, as well as a detailed glossary.

This study is the first to give a comprehensive account of extant dress accessories, especially brooches and belt buckles, from late ancient North Africa. In the first of two volumes, the findings dating from the latest period of Roman rule and the Vandalic period following it are presented, most of which were not published before. In addition to aspects of the chronology and geographical distribution of these findings, which are of high importance for protohistoric and Provincial Roman archaeology, the study will focus on questions about the wearers and their cultural identity.

Wizlav (the boy), who was probably identical with Prince Wizlav III of Rügen († 1325), was not only a creator of original texts, but also a gifted melodist. Among the authors of Middle High German songs, he occupies a special position, since all the melodies not only to his songs but also to his minnesongs have been preserved in the Jena Song Manuscript (c. 1340/50); the minnesong melodies have otherwise been almost completely lost. The new edition takes the place of older attempts at editions. It offers not only the texts and melodies, but also translations into New High German as well as a detailed commentary on the stanzaic forms, the melodies, the text types and the sometimes difficult language of the author, plus a facsimile of the source.

This book is about relations between literature, society and politics in the Arab world. It is an attempt to come to terms with the changing conceptualizations of the political in Arabic literature in recent modern history. It examines historical and contemporary conceptions of literary commitment (iltizām) and how notions of ‘writing with a cause’ have been shaped, contested, re-actualized since the 1940s until today. Against the backdrop of the current social and political transformations in the Arab world, questions on the role of the arts, specifically literature and its politics, arise with immediacy and require profound reflection and analysis.
